I've read some reviews on Amazon that Whibal cards aren't made the way they used to. Are they still made of solid plastic where the neutral grey color goes all the way through? Thanks

Does the letters and markings (like the cross hair marker in the center) on the card affect custom white balance on the camera?
No. The cross hairs are for centering your camera's center focus point so that you can either fill the majority of your LCD in LiveView or viewfinder or to aim your strobes dead centre on the card. Keep in mind that you need to eye dropper several grey areas of the card to get the best reading to your eyes.

Is this an 18% gray?
No. The maker states that it is designed as a "Gray Card for Accurate White Balance". It is not for exposure which is the function of your camera's light meter. It is done for colour accuracy.
