To get the best from your digital camera, using a gray card is the most accurate method available for setting white balance. WhiBal's G7 White Balance Reference Gray Card (7.5x10") is extremely accurate, convenient gray card that can be used in any shooting situation. It can also be used to set neutral White and Black reference areas for setting dynamic range in digital capture using the Black and White Eyedroppers available within Lightroom and other RAW conversion software, Photoshop and most other editing software.

By photographing a gray card reference for each lighting situation, you'll be able to achieve a proper white balance for all of your pictures. The gray card reference picture can be used with software to balance the color casts that various lighting conditions produce with all digital cameras.

Spectrally neutral--reflects all colors through the spectrum equally. The G7 Reference Card has both *a and *b Lab channel values of less than 1 at D50 and are spectrally "flat". It's spec'd at less than +/- 0.5.
Maintains its spectral neutrality under all reasonable temperature and environmental conditions.
Physically rugged--waterproof and scratchproof (color goes all the way through, not just a coating on top).
Does not respond to UV light any differently than the visible spectrum.
Each card is individually measured with a precision spectrophotometer to certify that it meets or exceeds stringent specifications.
Designed for low reflectivity, except that the sticker is intentionally highly reflective so that maximum TrueBlack Blackpoint level may be achieved by observing for maximum glare point.
Can be used to set white balance reference, Black point and White point.

My second one. They work, but overpriced and too much stuff

Personally, I would rather this just be a plain grey panel with no markings or white/black patches on it. This might also reduce the spendy price a bit. All the markings just get in the way when all I want to do is get the grey to mostly fill the frame to take a sample photo and create a custom white balance in-camera. It doesn't need to be a focus target (or put that target stuff on the back).

The big brother in the WhiBal family

Useful for fine-tuning white balance, even with studio lighting. The bigger size is helpful on some shoots. I have the smaller WhiBal card as well as this one, and use both. This larger one does not have a stand like its little brother. Like all WhiBal products, it has the standard gray throughout the plastic of the card, so scratched and wear marks don't affect its performance the way they would with a printed card.

My favorite gray card for color balance. This is my 3rd card by this manufacturer and I still wish they made them out of plastic. That will cost them one Michelin star. These cards are expensive so I guess the move was to save money. The plastic ones last forever (if you don't lose them). Still the best card to color accuracy.

The king of the gray cards

I have use other gray cards only to get warmer coloration than I like. Save money and buy this one rather than another only to buy again later on. The large one I use for video and the next size down for indoor stills - which also fits in my pants pocket. The credit card sized only is in the camera bag for emergency use.

Pretty much need this is any kit to capture those mixed light situations while running and gunning. Only downside is clearly the size, but if you don't mind clipping it to you tripod or have an assistant...you're good. Still would purchase the smaller one to have on the fly.

This arrived so quickly and in perfect condition. This has literally cut editing time in half. The colors I can get now are amazing. Cannot recommend this enough!!

Nice size, but just a thin foam core at a very high price

I love the size of the 7.5x10 card and the focus target. It works as intended, but I am deducting 1 star because it is basically a thin foam-core board, not solid plastic. It should have come mounted in a protective frame. The second-star deduction is for the price given that the build quality is not as durable as I had hoped. I am keeping it as it is functional, but I still haven't found my perfect gray card for field use.

Does the letters and markings (like the cross hair marker in the center) on the card affect custom white balance on the camera?

No. The cross hairs are for centering your camera's center focus point so that you can either fill the majority of your LCD in LiveView or viewfinder or to aim your strobes dead centre on the card. Keep in mind that you need to eye dropper several grey areas of the card to get the best reading to your eyes.

No. The maker states that it is designed as a "Gray Card for Accurate White Balance". It is not for exposure which is the function of your camera's light meter. It is done for colour accuracy.
