How many kinds of photo assignments can you can handle with a compact outfit like the Impact Two Digital Monolight Kit without Case (120VAC)? You'd be surprised. It's got 2 VS-LCD 400w/s digital monolights--800w/s of power plus two light stands,  and two white translucent umbrellas.

Light output in the monolights can be varied in 1/10-stop stages over a 4-stop range, accessible through the digital readout. The 150W modeling light can be coupled to the flash, getting brighter or dimmer to match the actual light output, or independently set to the level you want. The monolight accepts S-type monolight reflectors and head accessories. It also has a limited Auto Dump function, firing the strobe when you reset to a different power level (so the strobe is automatically set to the correct setting for the next flash). A built-in optical slave allows the monolight to be triggered using another flash. The white umbrellas soften and broaden the light. The aluminum light stands lock with sure-twist section locks, and if you forget to tighten a section with your light mounted, the light comes down slowly, thanks to the air-cushioning. And the light stands will accept casters, which makes positioning the lights a snap.

Impact White Translucent Umbrella (43")

This 43" White Translucent Umbrella from Impact is a versatile all-around light modifier that will create a pleasing light that's far less harsh than a bare light source. It can be used with flash, LED, or fluorescent light sources. As a shoot-through umbrella, it broadens and softens the light source output and minimizes shadows, making it ideal for portrait photography. The translucent fabric's diffusing properties allow light source to be placed close to a subject for a softer light that's also great for weddings and fashion. It has a standard size 8mm umbrella shaft that is compatible with most umbrella mounts.

This 43" diameter umbrella is useful for lighting one or two people for mid- and full-length portraits. It can also be reversed to use as a bounce-style umbrella to cover a larger image area.

Impact VS-LCD400 Reviews

Great versatile light for the money

I have 4 of these with different diffuses, boxes, and other attachments. In slave mode, they sometimes misfire on lower flash settings, but flawless when paired with multiple Impact PowerSync 16 receivers.

Great for the first year...but that's it!

I purchased three of the Impact 400w Digital Monolights about a year ago after doing a lot of research. I only shoot a few times a month, so I thought these would be perfect. I was happy with my purchase at first, but then the problems started. One of monolights stopped triggering the other two light when I used theImpactPowerTrigger 16 Channel AC Transmitter and Receiver Set that came with the lighting kit I purchased. So, I simply marked that light with a NO so I wouldn't use it to fire the other two lights. Last month, however, one of the other lights started overheating after about 45 minutes into a shoot. When this happens, the LCD display goes blank and it stops firing. Now, two days ago, the bolt that locks the tilt on the third light no longer tightens (stripped?). I could understand if ONE of these three issues occurred over time if I were a full-time photographer. I'm not a full-time photographer, and ALL of these issues have occurred. I realize that these are budget lights, but I would have expected them to last a lot longer, especially since I don't use them very often.

This is the ONE

I did quite a bit of research and product comparisons. I was very pleased when my lighting kit arrived, set it up and got to test it out. I am sold on the Impact line of lighting and products, very high quality and designed friendly for use in the studio. The entire kit is all that I needed.

looks durable. The recycle time is 1-2 seconds. I had this at 5.5 strenght or probably 3/4 of max power and was able to get f8.0 with the camera and strobe 10 ft away from the subject. I was shooting with a 43 inch reflective umbrella. ISO was at 200 and shutter at 1/125 sec. Not as heavy as I though. LED controls in the back are a plus. Has a built in fan that you can hear. Good afforable and puts out plenty of light. I am trying to shoot a family portrait with this has my only light source.

Good to star with.

So far I have used this just a few times in a small studio setting. So far it performs as advertised and seems to be durable and dependable. That being said it has it's drawbacks. For example even on low power settings once the flash fires the whole unit, modeling light and all goes dim for a second or two. That also leads to the slow recycle time. When I saw 2 seconds I didn't think it would be to bad, but during that two seconds the modeling light is down as well. So you get a blinding burst of light then total darkness if you have a well closed off set. I have laughed it off for the most part because the shots have turned out great, you just need to be patient.

Nice power range

I'm using this for some corporate type portraits shooting through an umbrella. At ISO 100, I can change the power level to run from F4 to F16 easily. Very flexible. The only reason I took it down a star is because I've had some issues with it syncing with a pocket wizard. It's built in sensor works fine as long as I'm using another flash to trigger it. Seems like it works sometimes, but not others.

Great product for the money spent

I've been using speedlights in my garage studio for a number of years and thought I would try monolights. I shopped around and decided on the Impact 400W/s. The 400W/s has a LCD display and a fan to keep it cool. The unit is a little larger than my 300W/s, but I'm getting used to the weight difference. Slave works great as well as the controls on the rear display. A great product for those who are getting into studio photography.

What is the fastest shutter speed I can use with this Monolight?
Asked by: Tommy
As the Impact One Monolight Kit (120VAC), B&H # IMVSLCD400K, is not a TTL flash with High-Speed Sync capabilities, the maximum shutter speed you may use will depend on the standard maximum flash sync speed used by your camera. With most focal-plane cameras, this will be 1/250 sec. If your camera/lens has an internal lens shutter, you may be able to use the flash at your lens' maximum shutter speed. Check with your camera's manufacturer for your camera model's standard maximum flash sync speed.

question

Would this kit work with a pocket wizard and speed light? Also are there battery packs for AC so that I can shoot on location?
Asked by: Henry F.
I have the mono light with softbox kit for work. It is a visual slave, so when my other personal speed light fires, it fires as well. It will not pick up directly to a pocket wizard or any other radio transmitter. It does have a sync cable, but it is flimsy and does not stay in the jack very well.

question

Does this kit include everything I will need to start shooting with my Nikon D610? Or will I need to buy accessories to make this kit compatible with my camera?
Asked by: joseph P.
Yes. This kit will include everything you will need to start shooting with Nikon D610. I have a D600 and this kit worked like a charm. I got significantly more professional looking shots than by shooting with speedlights. You don't need to buy any extras. Of course, if you want to expand your studio set-up capabilities, there is always more you can buy!
