And there are many brands, shapes and size softboxes.This is a few of many that will work very well, the Impact Luxbanx Small Octagonal Softbox (36 ) And the Impact Luxbanx Medium Rectangular Softbox (24 x 32 ).

Is there a way to turn the optical slave off to strictly use a transmitter? (Or a function to keep firing with other strobes without having to turn the entire unit off?) My master does have grouping options, but I wondered if I could just toggle between radio vs optical using the flash unit instead, if that makes sense
You can cycle the optical slave off via the button on the head marked slave.

This monolight kit can be used with the Nikon D3000 by adding a radio trigger to it such as the Vello FreeWave LR Kit with 2 Receivers B&H # VERFWLRK. This gives you a transmitter for the camera and a receiver for each light.
