Impact VSD-160 Overview

The Impact Digital Monolight - 160W/s (120VAC) as part of the VSD Series of monolights is proof that a 160 watt/second monolight does not need to be expensive. The VSD160 provides enough stored power to light a head-shot portrait or small still-life setup. It has features found on monolights that cost twice as much.

This monolight has a digital readout coupled with its four-stop power variator. It accepts S-type monolight reflectors and head accessories. The VSD160 has cushioned touch-pad function control buttons. Power is adjustable in 1/10 stop increments, from full to 1/8 power. Its model light intensity may be controlled coupled to, or independent from the strobe power levels you select.

The VSD160 is available as part of several complete lighting kits. Two more powerful versions of this light are the VSD300 and VSD400.

This monolight has a limited "Auto Dump" feature, which automatically fires the strobe when you reset to a lower power level.
Built-in optical slave "sees" the light from other flashes, and fires this monolight automatically.
A Sync Cord with miniplug to PC connection is included.
Its recycle beep tone may be switched on or off.

As being one of the lower watt/second models in the Impact VSD lineup, these 160's are packing some amazing power! I ordered 2 of these for a small beginner portrait setup and I could not be more pleased. I am quite picky when it comes to ordering anything that I plan on using professionally, but these came to me highly recommended by a photographer who's been in the business for decades and he knew exactly what he was talking about. I thought the 60 watt modeling lights would be too dim for the job, but with both modeling lights at full power, there is no issue at all. If you're looking for a beginner these are perfect, and they are also perfect for any professionals looking for a small studio setup.

I bought these heads in a complete package and really fell in love with them. Impact makes good product and I would recommend these monolights to any beginner.

Great for the value

I purchased two of these as my first strobes. They were sold as a kit with the 160 Watt-second monolight, and an 8 foot air-cushioned light stand, and an Impact translucent 43 inch umbrella for under $--an incredible value.I was impressed with the build quality of these for the price. The interface is very user friendly. The Bowen mounting system allows for a broad range of modifiers to be adapted. The 7 inch grid reflector being included is a nice touch and sets you up from the start to be able to use grids on the monolights. The one downside: You cannot, so far as I can tell, turn off the beep on button press. The audio button turns off the beep on recycle, but it doesn't silence the unit when you're changing the power or pushing any other button. I don't need to hear myself press a button.

Decent

The heads work pretty good, not super strong but definitely adequate. The mount onto the stand really has to be tightened hard, which I hope won't strip them over time, otherwise the head will tilt downwards. The soft boxes are nice, and seem pretty sturdy. The stands aren't the best, they didn't really stay put with the weight of the strobe (which really isn't that much). I would say overall for the price, and the soft boxes alone, it's a good deal.

This was my first purchase as far as studio equipment goes. I am happy with them so far. They provide great light and are easy to operate. Although, the biggest set back is they make a loud beep everytime you change the settings. Like , almost as loud as a smoke alarm. It can be really irritating if you are in a small space. They also aren't super fast, you have to wait a few seconds between shots. But other than that, these are great. Very affordable. Good if you are just starting out

question

can say me what softbox is compatible?
Asked by: Alfonso R.
The impact Digital Monolight 160W/s light uses the Bowens S mount so there are many speedrings and softboxes that fit.A good speedring that will work with that flash and many softboxes is the Impact Speed Ring for Impact, Bowens S, Westcott. And there are many brands, shapes and size softboxes. This is a few of many that will work very well, the Impact Luxbanx Small Octagonal Softbox (36 ) And the Impact Luxbanx Medium Rectangular Softbox (24 x 32 ).

The Impact Digital Monolight 160W/s (120VAC), B&H # IMVSD160, has a output range from 1/1 full output to 1/16th output. At the minimum 1/16th output, the wattage output would be 10 watts.

question

Is there a way to turn the optical slave off to strictly use a transmitter? (Or a function to keep firing with other strobes without having to turn the entire unit off?) My master does have grouping options, but I wondered if I could just toggle between radio vs optical using the flash unit instead, if that makes sense

You can cycle the optical slave off via the button on the head marked slave.

question

Will this unit work with a Nikon D3000 body and what accessories would I need for Product Photography with this?
Asked by: Unaflex ..
This monolight kit can be used with the Nikon D3000 by adding a radio trigger to it such as the Vello FreeWave LR Kit with 2 Receivers B&H # VERFWLRK. This gives you a transmitter for the camera and a receiver for each light. As for what accessories you can use for product photography, it would be best to e-mail us to [email protected] with this inquiry so we can better assist.
