I use this compact dome port for underwater photography, specially taking wide angle shots. It is compact and light, it is ideal for traveling when weight limit is an issue. It has its limitations such as it is little tricky to take over-and-under shots because it is not a optical dome (glass) and the water droplets tends to stick to the port, but if one knows how to use the port there is a chance you can use it for o/u shots. Yes, you will see some minor distortion around the edges but with camera that has 18+ MP, you can afford to crop a small percentage of the photo.

I bought this to use with my two Sea & Sea NX series housings - an NX-90Z and a DX-D70. I have both the Nikkor 16mm and 10.5mm DX fisheye lenses and had been using the full size fisheye dome port with them. The problem with the big dome port was that it made the DX-D70 housing quite positively buoyant which makes it awkward to properly compose some shots and was also tiring on my arms on a long dive - expecially the 58 minutes of deco after diving the San Francisco Maru in Truk Lagoon last year! I have used the compact dome port on about a half dozen dives with both the film and digital setups and I'm very happy with it. The DX-D70 setup is perfectly neutrally buoyant and both it and the NX-90Z are beautifully balanced. I have not noticed any image quality issues using the smaller dome however there is one small issue with the 10.5mm DX fisheye. There is a gold band around the front of the lens barrel and some gold lettering on the lens which can reflect the light from the strobe inside the dome port causing bright spots in the picture which look like backscatter. The answer was to make up a couple of black elastic loops to slip onto the lens barrel to cover the gold logos on the lens.
