The Heat Company Smart Overview

Keep your hands and fingers warm and dry even in the harshest conditions with these Heat 3 Smart Mittens/Gloves, in dark army green, from The Heat Company. When you're out in the cold, conserve heat by using the outer mitten, and then when you need to do some work, get a drink, snap a selfie, or perform any task that requires dexterity, just fold the mitten and thumb back to expose your liner-gloved fingers. The integrated inner lining allows full use of your hands, yet still helps keep your fingers warm.

Your first layer of protection from the elements is a wind- and water-resistant mitten shell with Primaloft Gold synthetic down insulation. The back of the mitten has a zippered pocket that can hold a disposable hand warmer, your car keys, a credit card, or cash. The palm is reinforced with soft and durable goatskin which is naturally water and wear resistant. Extra-long cuffs with drawstrings keep heat in and snow or wind out. When it's time to get to work, flaps on the fingers and thumb fold back and are held out of the way with simple magnets. Heat 3 Smart built-in glove liners are located beneath the flaps, featuring synthetic fabric that is breathable and wicks moisture away from your skin. Even when wet, the liner's insulation properties protect your fingertips from cold. For added usability the thumb, fore, and middle fingers have special material on the tips that allow you to use the touchscreen on your phone, camera, or sports watch.

Every Pair of Gloves is a Compromise

By J David

Like any other pair of gloves, these are perfect for some things related to photography and less so for others. But let's face it, there's a balance between dexterity and warmth with every glove. This glove tries very hard to balance the dexterity/warmth scale by having a mitten style that always provides greater warmth, with individual finger liner gloves. I wish the pull straps and the parts allowing you to fold back the four fingers and thumb parts were a little longer so you could grip it with the other hand still having the full glove on. Sometimes I had to fully take off the glove on one hand to be able to pull back the portion covering the fingers and thumb. Particularly if I was in a hurry. For the most part the compromise in very cold weather works better than any other glove I've used. I noted that some reviewers still complained that their hands got cold. Each person will feel cold in their far extremities at different time/temperature levels. I tend to be slightly more sensitive to cold than the average person and found these suited my purposes very well. As some reviewers have noted, if you are using the inner liners, and you order a large enough size, you can easily insert a hand warmer pack in the outer glove. I found that in most temperatures above 15 degrees F my hand started sweating while using a hand warmer. Below that temp my hands stayed warm but perspiration free with a hand warmer. YMMV. I've used these in the Canadian Rockies in January and they suited my purposes well. I found the gloves to be well made and after a number of uses they show no signs of wear. If this fits your needs, don't hesitate to order them.

They'll keep your hands warm, get a size larger

Warm gloves, have to learn how to handle camera with these, I'd say practice at home as with any gloves. Obviously, when in full mitten mode you can't take any pictures, idea is that is when the camera is on a strap or tripod, etc. waiting for the shot. Flipping the mitten off an exposing inner finger liners let's you control the camera, I found that glove gets a bit in a way when I do that. Magnets at great. When extremely cold you'll find that fingers will get cold as with any thin glove, especially in wind wet conditions.

These are nice and warm. They are also for very specific use - if you do not need access to gloves you do not need these. They are great for photography. The sizes are WAY off. The size chart says a size 10 would fit. I ordered a size 11 and returned it for a 12. You do not want tight fit for cold weather.

Zipper Broke after 1.5 Months, Poor Customer Service

I am a professional mountain sports photographer and bought these gloves for the extreme cold in the Canadian Rockies. The zipper broke in 2 separate places on the right glove within only 1.5 months of use. The Heat Company has been not very accommodating and exhibiting extremely poor customer service. These gloves are not built to last and are not worth the price, from my experience, and in my humble opinion. I'm extremely disappointed as I use these for work as a professional mountain sports photographer, and they failed after only moderate use.

I used these gloves while photographing animals in Yellowstone. -8 degrees Fahrenheit. Only problem I had was the pockets for the handwarmers was useless. Instead I put the handwarmers inside the mittens directly next to the inner gloves.

These gloves were in a love/hate relationship with my a couple of weeks ago in Alaska. I was constantly having to pull the fingers back out to get them back on. What I really liked about them is the space on both both sides of your hands where you can put the warming pads. When adjusting my camera in the minus 18 degree Fairbanks weather, I wore them but for fine adjustments to my camera, I had to pull them off and I just kept warmers in pockets and quickly went back and forth from my warm pockets and camera like every 10 seconds.

Size 6 is not the same as website described

Overall the product is warm. But If you buy a size 6, the product is not the same as the website described. 1. Rather than a magnate pad on the thumb, it has a stick pad 2. The touch screen Liner is only on two, rather than 3 fingers. 3. The tax is applied due to it is a special order shipped from Europe and does not use a clothing tax category tax which has a $175 tax-free in MA.
