Powering the RING72 is simple with two separately purchased options available: either four AA batteries, alkaline or NiMH rechargeable, or a detachable lithium-ion battery, making the setup thoroughly portable, especially in the field. Additionally, it mounts directly to most lenses and comes with 49, 52, 55, 62, 67, 72, and 77mm adapter rings.

Good Macro Ring Light IF....

If you use the optional Godox VB26 Lithium battery you will probably really like this ring light. Otherwise, if you use AA size Ni-Cad or alkaline batteries you will be greatly disappointed. I have several Godox flashes that I like so I felt confident in buying this Godox LED ring light. The Godox advertisement and the Godox manual with the LED light states that the light will work with AA size Ni-Cad and alkaline batteries. I started with my rechargeable Ni-Cad batteries that were fully charged as indicated by my battery tester. The ring light would only stay on at the lowest level on the adjustment dial, a setting of 1 on a scale of 10. If you changed to the 3 power setting the light would shut off. Next I tried new AA Energizer Max alkaline batteries that showed 100% capacity with my battery tester. The ring light did turn on at various power settings for about 10 minutes and then it indicated the battery was exhausted and shut down. However, my battery tester showed the alkaline batteries still were at 95% of their capacity. At this point I was ready to return the ring light. But in reading the manual it said the light also could use a custom Godox VB26 lithium battery. I ordered the lithium battery with a Godox VC26 USB charger. After fully charging the lithium battery I began testing. I ran the light for 13 minutes at the lowest 1 power setting, 12 minutes at the 5 power setting, and 10 minutes at the maximum 10 power setting. The light never shut off and still showed it had 75% capacity left by the indicator lights on the light controller. Success! My supposition is that the ring light needs the higher voltage of the lithium battery. If 4 AA Ni-Cad batteries are used connected in series the 1.2V of the individual batteries adds to 4.8V total. If 4 AA alkaline batteries are used the 1.5V of the individual batteries adds to 6.0V total. But the lithium battery is at 7.2 volts and that seems to make a big difference. The energy capacity (mill-amp hours, mAH) is about the same for a three types of batteries. Shame on Godox to promoting this light for use with batteries that plainly do not work. My only other complaints about the ring light have to do with the manual. It is unclear how to remove the battery carrier from the control housing. One must push and HOLD in a release catch while pushing on the battery carrier. They neglect the hold part. Also, when removing the ring light proper from the metal ring screwed to your lens one must pull out on the bottom of the LED ring and hold it out and then pull up to slide it off. Otherwise, I like the ring light. The individual power adjustments for the left and right sides of the light are good for a modelling effect and it has adequate brightness. Just know if you buy the lithium battery and charger you will nearly double the cost of a usable light system.

Eats batteries!

Put fresh alkaline batteries in the light- they lasted less than 30 minutes total. I took them out and tested them and they tested good, but with a power setting over 3, the battery indicator went to one LED and turned off. Tried freshly charged Ni-Mh batteries and with power level at 10, the light flashed on and off- I have ordered the Li-ion battery to see if the 7.2 volts last longer than the 6volts the AA batteries provide. If that fails, I shall return for a replacement. Otherwise the light works well for macro photography of small objects.

Godox Ring Light - OK, but not stellar.

I don't believe this is exactly a technical term, but my overall impression so far would be a meh. I guess it works ok, but I'm not overwhelmed by it for sure. I've only used it a couple of times so far, both times outside, and I really couldn't see a lot of difference it made. Perhaps it my fault, maybe I don't understand the limitations well enough, or maybe I thought it would be more powerful, but so far my response is a solid meh.

Using this for macro photos. Works like a charm. Light output is fantastic. Lighter than my previous ring light so stress on the lens and motors is reduced. Some impact to autofocus with STM lenses, not so much with the one USM I have. Being able to adjust the left and right arrays individually allows for some modeling and shadow control. Will test performance as a closeup portrait lens at a later time, but I'm quite sure it will perform well. Be aware that this attaches to the lens via screw mount adapter(s). If your lens does not focus internally but instead focuses by rotating the front lens element(s) then the light itself will also rotate. Not an issue if you have both arrays set to the same level but if set differently, say for modeling, you may need to rotate the LIGHT after focus to get your desired control.

My beef is more with B&H than the product. The specifications say quite plainly that an A/C Adapter included. I had an on-line chat with Leonard E from B&H on 4/14/22, @ 3:17 PM who confirmed the A/C adapter was indeed included. However when the unit arrived; there was no such adapter. Had I known that, I would have ordered the same unit, under a different brand name, from Adorama, for $20.00 less. They at least gave me accurate information during an on-line chat, stating that their item did not include said adapter. It's bad enough that B&H prints inaccurate information. But having a person confirm it is even worse. And while I'm sure they'd say that the manufacturer supplied that information, I say; That's no excuse.

I was so tired of messing around with corded lights or multiple small flashes to get a balanced center stage. This works perfectly for macro product shots as a main, especially in a small box with fill lights. It's easy to balance light color and makes shooting small stuff a lot easier. It uses standard size consumer batteries too!

Works as expected except the AA batteries don't seem to last more than one session. The battery indicator rapidly drops to 1 light then in about 30 seconds it shuts off when set to the 9 and 10 light level. What is interesting is that when I test the batteries that are too weak to power the light, they test good! I spran8 for the WB100 Li-ion 7.2v battery to see if it lasts longer since it starts at a higher voltage. If this does6 help, I think I'll have to return for an exchange to see if this one was just defective.
