SmallRig HSS2425 Overview

Use the Aluminum Universal Side Handle from SmallRig to securely grasp your camera cage. This aluminum handle mounts via two 1/4"-20 screws spaced 0.71" apart. It can be configured for right- or left-side use and slides up and down 1.7" for optimal positioning on your rig.

The top of the handle features three 1/4"-20 threads and one cold shoe mount for adding a light, microphone, monitor, mounting arm, or other accessory. The Aluminum Universal Side Handle features a non-slip silicone grip and includes an Allen wrench that can be stored within the handle.

It's alright, not great for small hands.

I love that the handle is easy to install on your camera rig and has a little compartment for your allen wrench to store. But it's a little too wide for my hands and I could tell from holding it that if I was holding my camera for a few hours I could get a cramp from the bulkiness of the side handle. I'm returning this in the hopes that I can exchange it for the wooden handle instead!

This handle is great for stability of hand shot stuff. I have pretty shaky hands, so this is a big help. (*not gimble like stabilization) I love the built in allen key holder, it's a bigger help than I thought it would be. Also the fact that it can be mounted either left or right is very helpful. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great handle with good features. It's pretty comfortable in the hand too.

I have this mounted on a cage for my R5 and it is great. It is quick to remove and adjust as needed. I have even used it when taking pictures in the live view as it really makes it even easier. I love the fact that you don't need any tools to install it. Simply turn the knobs and that's it.

This handle worked excellent, it can be mounted left or right, regular or upside down. The allen tool is held in the handle by magnets, really slick. I bought this to use with my atomos monitor cage (smallrig) and it works excellent. Much nicer to use the monitor handheld now. Glad I bought these. The nice cold shoe and 3 1/4-20 thread mounts on top are nice touches.

Totally loving all of the SmallRig stuff. I got the cage for my BMPCC 6K as well as the HDMI & USB Type-C Cable Clamp and Samsung T5 SSD Mount v2, but this side handle, in its default configuration, doesn't leave room for the clamp and cables and the connection covers being open. I was able to disassemble and flip the anchor around, which solves that problem; it only puts the handle about an inch forward of the right grip - so just a little off kilter, and maybe not a deal breaker. Now I'm thinking of returning for the ARRI-style mount version, if there's enough room between the back and all of the cables for my thumb to grab on.

This handle works perfectly with the rig. I got 2 of them to even it out and make it such a breeze to grab footage. It's well built and works just as I need it to.

How much weight can this support?

While the manufacturer does not give a weight limit for the SmallRig Aluminum Universal Side Handle (B&H# SMHSS2425), we'd feel comfortable using it for up to 12 pounds of weight (5.4kg) or even more if it's used with a well-balanced rig.
