Explore Scientific Astro R-Lite Reviews

Decent Light, But...

The Explore Scientific Astro R-Lite is a mixed bag: It is a pretty nice compact light, but, the need to constantly cycle through Bright-Dim-Flashing modes to get a particular mode is a major nuisance. It give the impression of just being a regular flashlight with a red LED. I hope the battery life is good in Dim mode.

Decent build quality, not amazing. LED light is quite dim - some might prefer it this way however

Solid little redlight

Metal housing is quality. Takes 1 AA battery. Does the job

Good for a specific purpose

A tactical flashlight with single AA battery. Red LED with a diffuser lens. Claims to be adjustable but the adjustment has insignificant impact on performance. Light is great for closeup viewing of sky charts, keyboard or Astro equipment in the dark without diminishing night vision. But it is so diffuse that you can’t see your feet with it. So no good for walking back to camp or packing your car. You’ll need another light for those tasks.

Light is a deep red. Beam of light is nice and wide (kind of like a flood-light) which is helpful.

Finally - a dim red astro flashlight!

I've owned many different red LED flashlights, and they are invariably much too bright if you wish to preserve your night vision. This one is different, and is just right for using for reading maps, checking an eyepiece focal length, etc. while actually observing. However, it is not intended for, nor bright enough, for walking at night, or checking to be sure you have everything when packing up at your dark site.

Just the right amount of light

Wanted something small, well made and not very bright, this fits all the criteria plus it has a very usable neck strap. Very happy with this purchase. I would definitely buy it again if needed.

Total Garbage

Build quality seemed good and the first time I put a battery in it to test it I was happy - my happiness ended when I tried to actually use it. Switch stopped working the first time out - after a few clicks it stuck - a hard whack will unstick it but really it is like taking $20.00 and throwing it out the window. I was swayed by the good reviews - perhaps I just got a bad one BUT if I got a bad one you might too.
