Vello White Balance Card Set Reviews

Good product, but not for me

This review is for the large size card set. Overall, I think these are good cards. However, a few things surprised me: * They're made out of plastic. I thought they'd be made out of cardboard. * They are quite thin (perhaps the thickness of a credit card). They don't always lay flat. * The finish is not matte enough; they have a slight sheen. For use on my DIY copy stand setup, you could see light glare on the surface of the cards. That makes it more difficult to get accurate exposure or color readings. Plus, when the cards don't lay flat, the glare can be worse. * The gray card seems cooler (more bluish) than other gray cards I remember. * While the nylon, zippered case is a nice idea, I think it's a bit too small. You need to fiddle with the cards to get them out or put them back in because the fit is so tight. From the reviews I've read, many people like these cards. That's great. However, for me, they didn't meet my expectations. I returned them. Thank you to B&H Photo for your awesome return policy.

The white cards are the perfect size for an imaging project I'm working on. The white card has been the most useful for setting the white balance for each imaging session - the color appears accurate throughout the process. The lanyard is very handy for easy access and for storing the card set!

Hope to use this a lot on my next trip.

I'm planning a trip to both rims of the Grand Canyon, then to Zion for several days, and ending at Bryce. If I have a day or two left I want to hit Canyonlands and Arches. This should really help my color balances. Looking forward to using this a lot.

'Bout time someone gave a review with photo references... - - - Use the Delta 1 Gray card (cardboard) in the studio here and compared this to the Vello (plastic) three sizes set that just arrived. - - - First pic WB set from the Delta, second the Vello. Eyeballing I could see the Vello being cooler / bluer. Pics show the difference. With WB set from the Vello there's a bit of red / warmth being introduced that's spotted in the whites with the Delta card now picking up some as well. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of bothering with a gray card at all. - - - - So what's one to do with the Vellos? WB off the white chips only. As for the gray chips... I'm cutting up the cardboard Delta and gluing it to the plastic Vello for a more accurate reference. And BELIEVE those other one star reviews that report the problem of it being 18% gray.

If I'm looking for consistent color in narrative ...

If I'm looking for consistent color in narrative film across different shotcomps, does it make more sense to aim my camera at a WB card and set the WB in-camera (which will change the Kelvin temperature each time for each setup), or, would it be better for consistency across multiple shots/lighting setups, to set the WB to the color temp of the lights I'm using (5600K, daylight) for the in-camera WB, and then set the WB in post, by using the WB eyedropper, clicking on the same gray card recorded in frame, used w/ different lighting setups?
Asked by: Kevin
The standard for video and white balance is to set the camera using a custom white balance from the Vello White Balance Card Set (Large). That is if the camera allows a custom white balance.

question

Are these cards waterproof? I'd like to take them diving.
Asked by: Luis S.
While they are coated for normal wear and tear, these are not made for underwater use. I would instead recommend Amphibico Aluminum White Balance & Color Chart - 7 x 11 (B&H # AMACWB0711) which is specifically made for diving. A low end solution would be a simple piece of duct tap on a fin.

If I'm filming the WB cards and then using WB selector/eyedropper in post (in premiere pro), should I use the Gray card or the White Card with the eyedropper tool? Feels weird using a gray card for WB. Looking for consistent colors across multiple takes
Asked by: Kevin
One can use the gray card in the Vello White Balance Card Set (Large) for white balance, however it is recommended that one use the white card for best results.
