Godox LED500LR Bi-Color Reviews

Swing and a miss

I had already written a review on this product, but could not find a way to edit it. After a few more days of playing with it, I am even more negative than I was initially. 1. The light dims to 10%, but ONLY at the extreme low color temperature setting. A single click (from 3300K to 3400K) and the light instantly jumps to 25% brightness. 2. Without the mounting yoke that comes with every other model of this light, and pretty much every panel light of this type, you have to use a ball head to effectively mount the light and adjust its position. It is much more inconvenient than I first imagined it would be. 3. I'm not convinced of the accuracy of the color temperature. As I said in 1 above, a single click brings a BIG jump in intensity. But it also appears to jump significantly toward the blue end of the spectrum. 4. The barn doors are flimsy, and not removable without surgery. I thought I might put it in a soft box designed for panel lights, but the doors got in the way. Unscrew the doors, and it would still leave the little tabs connected to the light, and likely void the warranty. I wanted the LR model, without doors, but couldn't find it anywhere. I appreciate that it is a low price point light, but I bought it mostly because it would work with the Godox remote(s) I have. But neither the convenience of the remote, nor the low price point offset the negatives for me. B&H is always good to deal with, and I like all my other Godox products. I virtually never send equipment back, but for this I am going to make an exception.

First piece of Godox gear I haven't loved

I bought this for my small studio where I do solo YouTube videos. The short version is that this panel puts out a LOT of light, but the dimming and color temperature controls leave a lot to be desired. The lowest brightness is supposed to be 10% of max, but it is much more than that. The warmest temperature is 3300K, but turn the dial one click and it instantly takes a very large jump to the white/blue end. A single click, and it is instantly too blue/white. I think the two things are related. The LED's simply aren't capable of being dimmed enough. When the white/blue LEDs kick in, they are already overpowering when they first get power. There simply isn't enough control of either brightness or color temp. I have a cheap Neewer panel that actually does a much better job of dimming, and has much more granular control of the color temperature. I wanted this one because it could be put on the same remote as my Godox SL lights, so I could work solo from the desk. I wanted the version without barn doors, but couldn't find that model anywhere. The barn doors are very flimsy, but aren't removable without major surgery, if at all. If you need a bright panel without a need to dim too far, or the need for any granular color control out at the tungsten end of the color spectrum, this is probably a good choice. For what I wanted, it isn't a good match. I absolutely hate sending equipment back, but I'm considering it for this piece.

This model comes without the metal bracket, which is kind of important. There are threaded holes on the sides - it is obviously made for one, but it isn't included. Is there any way to buy one separately?
Asked by: Scott
This unit is only available with a handle. The holes are to allow you o mount it on end.
