Really Right Stuff MTX Overview

The MTX Multi-Tool is designed primarily for use on Really Right Stuff equipment, as well as other industry standard photographic equipment. Really Right Stuff always uses hex screws on all their equipment, so it is essential that the MTX Multi-Tool should be used. It is a better tool to use versus trying to fit a coin into a slotted screw because more torque can be applied to tighten a camera plate to the base of a camera.

At the bottom of the driver handle, the anodized butt-cap is removable and conceals two bit holders, which contain 22 3/16" hex bits and 1 hex key. The first bit holder has 10 of the most commonly used hex bits for Really Right Stuff equipment. In addition, the second holder contains 12 more bits, and all the tips have been stamped with the corresponding tip size. The 3/16" hex key is also stored inside the handle, alongside the bits and two bit holders. Hex key and bits are coated to be resistant against corrosion. Furthermore, screwing the butt-cap on creates a waterproof seal.

The multi-tool's shaft is made of stainless steel, and the driver is magnetic to keep the bits in place. For a better grip, the driver handle is textured and will not slip from the hand when torque is applied. All components of the MTX Multi-Tool are made in the United States, except for the hex tips.

Really Right Stuff MTX Reviews

A Very Complete Multi-Tool

The RRS MTX is the only multi-tool I've found to include all required hex bit sizes for everything in my kit. The only thing missing is a straight bit for those occasional 3/8 screws with the slotted head and no hex port. Don't know where they'd put a straight bit of sufficient size for this purpose, which is probably why it doesn't have one. The tool is very well made and also includes some clever engineering with a male 3/8 screw at one end and a female 3/8 on the other end. This lets you store the tool on your tripod, if it has 3/8 fittings on the center post or elsewhere. Another positive is that the screwdriver form factor is much easier to use than the normal fold out multi-tool. There are some negatives: First, the tool comes with 24 bits, but can only hold 12 of them internally. The other 12 are stored in two cartridge holders with a plastic cylinder with a screw top is provided to hold those two extra cartridges. I selected my 12 twelve most used bits for storage in the handle, and keep the remainder in the plastic cylinder for those rare cases where I might need them. Second negative is that the design of the cartridges that hold the bits makes it quite difficult to remove the individual bits from the holder. The bits are tightly gripped by the holder and in close proximity to each other. Removal would be nearly impossible if wearing gloves. The perfect photographic multi-tool has yet to be created (as far as I know), but the RRS MTX comes the closest I've found so far.

I like cool tools, and couldn't help myself. Though this is designed to service the Really Right Stuff tripod (which I do not own), the tool is useful on other things with screws needing a variety of bits. Only the 3/8 stud and socket are not of universal use.

Well engineered

Just a tool, but comes with high variety of 'bits' to most likely cover any adjustment necessary in the field.

I have found that the RRS MTX Multi-Tool is very, very handy especially when using a tripod. It takes up little room in the bag. It doubles as an extension tube on a tripod head or a platypod.

Every kit needs one of these!

Everything I expect to need in one place when I am in the field taking pictures. It is a little pricey but worth the money in my opinion.

Exactly what I expected.

Appreciate the additional bits (and clear labelling) plus the protective tube for storing everything.

Are these standard bits? ie will aftermarket hex tips be compatible with this tool?

Really Right Stuff says The bits are *a* standard, but not the usual standard. The usual standard is 3/8" and these are 3/16". You can find them out there, but all we can guarantee is that these bits will fit a 3/16" driver, not the reverse, that an after market bit will fit the MTX, especially in terms of the storage caddy.
