B&H has put together a kit using predominantly Impact gear that's a great economical solution for your Photo Portrait Studio needs. The kit includes 3 fluorescent fixtures with 40W daylight-balanced lamps, two 6' stands, a 3' backlight stand, 2 white translucent umbrellas, 2 silver-beaded umbrellas, and a stand and umbrella case.
Kit Components:
The Single Socket Fluorescent Fixture from Impact is a lightweight fixture in a polycarbonate housing designed to accept Edison-base compact fluorescent lamps. It can be used with up to 105W CFL bulbs. The fixture's bracket tilts and locks into position and features a standard 5/8" receiver that mounts on any 5/8" stud or accessory.
The 3-section 6' Impact Black Light Stand is an economical support with an industry-standard 5/8" stud top with a 1/4"-20 thread. The stand folds down to 26.3" and weighs 1.8 lb.
This 3' black anodized aluminum Impact Back Light Stand consists of a base and riser. Use the lower part as a base to place a mounted light at floor or table level. Add the extension to the base to raise the height of the light to a maximum of 3'.
The 33" Impact Translucent White Umbrella both reflects light and allows it to pass through. Used in the traditional bounce mode, some of the light is reflected onto your subject while the rest is transmitted, increasing the room's ambient light level, adding fill and reducing contrast. Used in shoot-through mode, the outside of the umbrella is pointed toward the subject with the light source behind it. This allows you to shoot much closer than normal to render a very soft look.
The Impact 33" Beaded Silver Umbrella strikes a good compromise between high output and soft light quality. The black backing prevents light leakage and provides directional control while the beading breaks up the specular quality that standard silver umbrellas have.
The padded nylon Stand and Umbrella Case measures 36 x 9 x 9" and allows you to carry up to 25 lb of gear. It has a webbed double carry handle that is stitched completely around the outside of the case, as well a removable shoulder strap.

Great for small to medium-size lights, the black anodized aluminum 6' Light Stand from Impact is a lightweight (1.8 lb) support that can handle gear weighing up to 4 lb and folds down to just 26.3" to easily fit in a small bag. The stand has a minimum working height of 26.3" and a stable footprint of 30". The 3-section stand has an industry-standard 5/8" top stud with 1/4"-20 threads for additional mounting options.
- Light and compact design: The two telescoping risers extend to a full height of 6' and fold down to 26.3" for easy transport and storage
- Integrated 5/8" spigot: Compatible with lights, flash units, and other photo and video accessories with a 5/8" receiver
- Matte black finish: Prevents unwanted glare from reflected light
This 3' Impact Back Light Stand consists of a base and riser. Use the lower part as a base to place a mounted light at floor or table level, as low as 5.5". Add the extension to the base to raise the height of the light from 22.8" (57.9 cm) to a maximum of 3' (90 cm). The stand is constructed of black anodized aluminum.
The 45W, 120V CFL Photo Light Bulb from Alzo Digital is a spiral, compact fluorescent lamp with a daylight-balanced color temperature of 5500K and an output of 2800 lumens. The lamp has a high CRI rating of 91 indicating accurate color rendition that makes it a good choice for photography, videography, or general use. The lamp generates very little heat and UV, plus it is flicker-free up to 1000 frames per second. It has an 8000-hour lamp life and will fit all medium-base E26/E27 sockets.
This 33" White Translucent Umbrella from Impact is a versatile all-around light modifier that will create a pleasing light that's far less harsh than a bare light source. It can be used with flash, LED, or fluorescent light sources. As a shoot-through umbrella, it broadens and softens the light source output and minimizes shadows, making it ideal for portrait photography. The translucent fabric's diffusing properties allow light source to be placed close to a subject for a softer light that's also great for weddings and fashion. It has a standard size 8mm umbrella shaft that is compatible with most umbrella mounts.
This 33" umbrella is useful for lighting one or two people for a head-and-shoulders portrait. It can also be reversed to use as a bounce-style umbrella to cover a larger image area.
Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This Impact 33" Beaded Silver Umbrella is suggested for use in head-and-shoulders portraits for one or two persons.
The Impact Light Kit Bag #3 (Black) is a soft padded case designed to transport and protect a 2 monolight lighting kit. It has space to hold 2 monolights with reflectors, cables, umbrellas and light stands. It is carried by 2 overlapping carrying handles or the included shoulder strap.
