Core SWX GoPro Battery Eliminator with USB
Key Features
  • Power GoPro from a USB Power Source
  • Coupler Fits in Place of GoPro Battery
  • Incorporates a 10' USB Power Cable
  • Works with Skeleton Back Door
The GoPro Battery Eliminator with USB from Core SWX is designed to provide a secure way of powering a HERO3 or HERO3+ action camera from an external USB power source. The GoPro's form factor may be a major part of the camera's appeal, but it limits the effective battery life to what an internal battery can provide. Where the camera is readily accessible, it is simple enough to keep spare GoPro batteries on hand and simply swap out as needed. However, especially as a growing number of professional filmmakers are drawn to the GoPro's versatility, the camera is increasingly finding itself placed in spots that are difficult to access for a quick battery change. The GoPro Battery Eliminator employs a similar concept to a DC coupler that you may be familiar with from camcorders and DSLRs, using a coupler plate that mimics the original battery, but with a 10' power cord that terminates in a USB type A male power connector.

Core SWX DV-GP3-USB Overview

Since the HERO3 and HERO3+ cameras support USB charging, you can use the Battery Eliminator to power the camera from nearly any 5 VDC USB source: a laptop computer, portable powering station, car USB port, or even an AC wall adapter. In addition, using optional transformers, it is possible to adapt the USB to power from 12 VDC sources such as car batteries or professional video battery systems.

If a housing is used, the Battery Eliminator requires the Skeleton Housing. It is also possible to use the Underwater Housing with the Skeleton back door. Using the Underwater Housing will still provide splash protection from the front, however the camera will not be fully watertight because of the opening at the back for the USB cable.

question

Will the GoPro turn on by istelf once this cable is powered or do you still need to press the ON button physically on camera?
Asked by: Anonymous
Supplying the power is just like putting a charged battery into the GoPro. You still need to turn it on afterwards. Wireless will also be off until re-activated.

question

Will this work with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver?
Asked by: Andrew C.
No this will not work on any of GoPro Hero 4 models. The batteries although similar in size are inserted into the GoPro Hero 3 and 4 differently and therefore have the contact leads in different locations. However there is a battery eliminator kit for the GoPro Hero 4 models available here at B&H Photo.

question

Is the DC to DC step-down converter in the dummy battery box capable of handling input voltage higher than the average USB 5v? I'm hoping it's one of those step-downs that can handle 4.5 to 12 or 19, etc volts in because I want to use this with hard-wired vehicle power instead of a 12v to USB adapter. I'm not interested in adapters - I only want to know if I can feed in higher voltage and it will correctly convert to the 3.7-4V that the GoPro needs.
Asked by: Brad M.
CamDo has a version that will support up to 24V input.
