X-keys XK-80 Reviews

Best Programmable Keyboard Available

We're running control room software from Strasis Systems which directly supports all X-Keys keyboards. This keyboard provides our operators the ability to control what they see which greatly simplifies system interaction. We printed custom overlays for each key making it very simple to find a function quickly... the back lighting works great in low light conditions and is programmable (blue, red, magenta shades only). Overall a industrial grade product... we are very happy and have purchased additional X-Keys keyboards.

Good keyboard, sad software, loser documentation/manuals.

The X-keys hardware, the keypad, seems to be very good. The software, XK MW3.1 on Win 7 x64, is less than desirable, but could be improved. One problem: when installed, my CPU went up to 89% and everything else, including mouse, almost froze. The problem seems to be related to having other USB devices attached. I think I have it fixed now. Problem 2: Do a bunch of programming and there is apparently no way to print out the keypad configuration. I would be happy with a text or CSV file that said: Key 1, Layer 1, Shift Ctrl Tab; ... There is a bunch of difficult to use info in their .MW3 files and the hardware save is all in hex, with lots of single bits set (saves space) and no, zero, zip, nada, manual or documentation to decipher it. Lack of decent documentation is the fatal flaw. I bought this because I wanted hardware mode to use with different systems (dual boot, laptop - desktop). I don't need or want (buggy?) resident software to do fancy per software keys. 80 keys gives me what I want in hardware mode. Seems to be made in USA by engineering geeks who don't know how to write documentation. Best use: Part of industrial machinery (controllers, etc.). Sketchy use: consumer. On a scale from 1-10: Keypad 9; Software 5 ish; Documentation manuals 2 (there is a little and A SDK specifically not for Windows with unreadable files in Windows). IMHO: overall a 5, well-below modern Buy again? Not at this price, unless they produce documentation.

I purchased this to automate functions in X-Plane 11 to make the simulation more immersive and simpler. This is a wonderful product with excellent quality. Regardless of what you do, this can make your tasks so much simpler, which makes it more fun and productive.

I use this product in conjunction with Pfixer for Lightroom and it's cut my editing time into almost 1/3rd. If you're a photographer that loves hot keys and uses Lightroom, this is invaluable!

Very Versatile

I use this keyboard to start programs, bring up websites, open documents, and to run macros and shortcut keystrokes in several programs that I frequently use. Once you start programming, it's amazing how quickly you fill up all of the keys. If the XK-128 wasn't more than double the price, I would have gotten that one. Basic key programming, which I use for 90% of the keys, is fairly easy. If you learn to edit the program scripts, which is non-trivial, you can pretty much modify any effect of the keys and/or lights that you would need.I have had to contact PI Engineering for a couple of programming glitches, and they were very responsive in helping me work through the issues.

This is a good product. I would recommend it to anyone. Depending on your application, it can be a great work saver. Best product since Prokey. I will be buying an additional one soon. Thanks, Richard

On the specs for the X-keys XK-80 USB Programmable Keyboard, it says that MAC OS only goes up to OS 10.8. Is that true? Nothing beyond 10.8???
